The Florida Department of Health's (DOH) Obesity Prevention Program released a total of $50,708 in HOPE funds to 14 county health departments for interventions to support the Hispanic community's battle against overweight and obesity. According to the 2005 Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance Survey, 64.8 percent of adult Hispanic Floridians were overweight or obese.
“The rising epidemic of obesity threatens the health and welfare of the Hispanic population across the United States, but especially in Florida,” said DOH Deputy State Health Officer Bonita Sorensen, M.D., M.B.A. “The county health departments that are being awarded HOPE funds have demonstrated a clear need for this funding based on the populations they serve and their current initiatives.”
