Shakespeare Goes Modern

Full Description:

Braden Harrington, the cool and collected Miami Springs Middle School 7th-grader eagerly practices his lines as his part for the Pelican Playhouse adaptation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream an hour before the curtain call.

''I love the stage. It's practically my home,'' the 12-year-old, who acts as the plays interpreter and stage manager, says.

Braden is one of 25 actors featured in the play about two couple who fall in love with the wrong people all because of a love potion.

Artistic director Ralph Wakefield gave the play a modern twist by including the role of interpreter to atune the audience to Elizabethan English before the show and between acts.

''We warm up the audience so they feel comfortable hearing Old English by the time the play begins and to fill in the gaps between acts,'' Wakefield said. ``I feel that's necessary so viewers understand everything that is going on from start to finish.''
